I’ve always wanted to learn how to speak Spanish. I’ve tried so many times on my own and it never really caught on. I needed something structured that would also keep me motivated. I love taking classes with JR. You not only learn the fundamentals of the Spanish language but also about Mexican culture. JR is fun and energetic and enjoys teaching. Apps and podcasts are great resources, but participating in real conversation is how language is truly learned. JR is great at meeting you where you are and adjusting the conversation to your level, which helps to build confidence. The classes teach you grammar and build your vocabulary as you go along. He will tailor classes to your specific goals and interests so you get exactly what you want from them.

I have been trying to learn Spanish for a few years prior to learning about The American Spanish Club. I wanted to learn Spanish for practical reasons and also to learn basic (and hopefully advanced) conversation skills! I tried Pimsleur, Rosetta Stone, and various other apps which were okay but one really needs to have self-motivation (which I do not always have). Luckily, I stumbled upon The American Spanish Club and found my best teacher yet! I started taking classes during the pandemic and Jose was very accommodating by providing classes via zoom. It is also very convenient for me as a busy mom of two and I had the opportunity to take classes with my best friend in North Dakota!
I quickly realized that it was much better to take an actual class instead of trying to teach myself. Jose created all of the lessons which have various exercises for different learning styles. The best part of the class is practicing and learning by having conversations! This is something you cannot do on an app. Jose is very patient and answers any questions I have. He corrects me when I am wrong and does it all with a smile on his face. I highly recommend Jose and the American Spanish Club to anyone interested in learning the language. You will not be disappointed.

I’ve been working with Jose to improve my language skills so that I can communicate with my Spanish-speaking patients in the hospital I work. Since taking classes with Jose, I was able to build upon what I already know and now I can complete full assessments and make my patients feel comfortable! Jose is a great teacher who is flexible with students like myself who have busy schedules and sometimes little time to study. Working in a private classroom setting was engaging and was an enjoyable experience all around! My coworkers have commented on my language skills improving since starting classes and it’s been very rewarding to take his classes!

My wife and I are retired and travel out of the country a lot, often visiting Spanish-speaking places. I wanted to be able to speak directly with the locals there. I always had trouble with foreign languages, so I doubted that I would have much success. But thanks to the American-Spanish Club, I am now able to speak with the people in the places we visit. We have visited Mexico many times, mainland Spain as well as the Canary Islands, Puerto Rico many times, Belize and the Dominican Republic. I have been taking Spanish lessons with José at America Spanish Club. José has helped me reach the two goals that I set for myself when I began studying Spanish. I wanted to be able to travel to Spanish speaking countries and effectively communicate with Spanish speakers. Also, I wanted to read books in Spanish. I have wanted to learn another language, and have tried audio lessons, but have been stymied by the lack of opportunity to speak another language with others with any kind of frequency over the long term. I became interested in learning Spanish for many reasons, not the least of which is to have a better understanding of the new wave of immigrants now enriching the U.S, people not unlike my Italian family who came here just two generations ago, at the beginning of the last century, to make a new life. But I had not made any real progress until a friend recommended the American Spanish Club. I have now been a student with ASC studying Spanish for a while, and I am thrilled with the results. Working with José Reyes has not only enabled me to achieve my early goals for Spanish learning, but it has also been fun. José, as a native of Mexico and now also a long time citizen of the U.S., is not just expert in the grammar of both languages, but he is able to relate the similarities and the differences between them to me in such a personal, personable, and humorous way that he has made my classes at ASC a highlight of each week.
And, as one who has recently started his eighth decade, I believe I can safely predict that one is never too old to learn another language. Especially, here with the American Spanish Club. I hope others will join me at ASC because the more the merrier, not to mention the better to learn from each other.

The lessons learned and the interest in the cultures of Spanish speaking countries have led me to Spain, Argentina, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Panama, Chile, Uruguay, and Mexico. My life has been enriched by the ability to read and speak a second language. Jose has been an inspiration for my continued interest in the Spanish language. His teaching style is low key, but very effective. Not enough Americans learn a second language. Why should Europeans have all the fun of a second language?

Many people think that Spanish can be simply learned through using a computer course such as Rosetta Stone or DuoLingo. Although these are good tools, they are just that, tools. The full benefit of integrating Spanish into everyday use comes from being in class with the American Spanish Club. Jose has help me realize what I can do and has allowed me to enhance my shortcomings. Without the convenience of the classes and the teachings of Jose, I would not have learned as much as I have over the past year, nor would I be using it as part of my daily communications. I want to be fluent in Spanish! It is as plain and simple as that.
I am half Black and half Mexican. I was never taught Spanish growing up, which is a sore spot for me, but that doesn’t mean I can’t work towards acquiring this beautiful, romantic language. I took Spanish in high school for all four years, but the curriculum didn’t emphasize speaking, so reading and writing come more easily than speaking. That’s where ASC comes in!
ASC taught by Jose Reyes is the perfect club to learn Spanish AND speak it. Jose Reyes has fostered a comfortable, safe environment to learn Spanish no matter what level you’re at.
My friend Nathalie and I started together, and each week we love it more and more. Our vocabulary is growing, and personally, my confidence in speaking grows a little more each week.
My goal to be fluent is long term, so I am thankful that I was able to find a club that challenges me and makes me want to come back every week.

I have studied Spanish with Jose Reyes at the American Spanish Club. I have never lived in a Hispanic country, so I cannot claim to be fluent. To be able to have a conversation in Spanish with a Spanish-speaker is worth the price of admission. Before my retirement, I served a church that was involved in mission in Honduras, and I have continued my involvement in Honduras since my retirement. Jose was hugely helpful in preparing me for this work. At times I did presentations in Honduras in Spanish, and he was always willing to help me prepare for these. I have continued to take classes from him since my retirement because of my continuing involvement in Honduras, and because I now volunteer as an English teacher at the Latino-Hispanic American Community Center in Harrisburg.

Jose is able to assess your level of Spanish language proficiency and work with you on the skills that you need to develop or enhance.
I learned Spanish many years ago in college and in a study abroad program in Spain, however, as they say, if you don’t use it, you lose it. The American Spanish Club has given me the opportunity to speak Spanish with other colleagues and also people in the community. Jose helps me to feel comfortable with speaking Spanish while also encouraging me to push myself and feel confident!
In my current job, I work with many families that speak Spanish and I would like to communicate with them in a language that they understand. Jose is able to modify his lessons in order to accommodate my needs as a teacher. He teaches me vocabulary words that are important for me to know and then I can apply these skills in the real world.
Jose has really taught me the true meaning of learning a second language and has given me the courage and confidence to speak with others. José has been my Spanish teacher. His way of teaching balances the importance of learning grammar with stretching the student´s comprehension with free-flowing conversation and he skillfully draws students into a conversation. Reading materials that he chooses are interesting and are used to stimulate further student conversation. José is adept at recognizing when a student has not understood something. As a former language teacher myself, I appreciate Jose´s ability to give clear examples to explain a specific grammar point when a student is missing that point and not understanding why. He will try different explanations until there is understanding.
I recommend José Reyes especially for students who want to gain confidence in Speaking Spanish and improve their comprehension of Spanish spoken by a native speaker of Spanish.
